The Kosher Guide to Cape Town: Sea Point, Table Mountain and Where to Sleep for Shabbat
Cape Town is one of the few cities where a whole walking Shabbat can be planned without a second thought: Sea Point, on and around Main Road, concentrates Cape Beth Din restaurants, synagogues and Chabad, all within walking distance of the beach. Table Mountain and Camps Bay make a day trip, but the Shabbat base stays Sea Point.
Chabad Cape Town and the synagogues
Chabad of Cape Town (rated 4.8), on St Johns Road in Sea Point, is the tourist contact: minyan, Shabbat meals by advance registration and kashrut questions - not a public restaurant. The city's historic synagogue, Gardens Shul (4.7, dating to 1841), sits in the Gardens neighbourhood - not an easy walk from Sea Point, so anyone sleeping by the beach needs a car or shuttle for Shabbat.
See all optionsWhere to eat: The Press and Goldies
The Press Bar & Grill (4.5), on Main Road, is the sit-down meat restaurant - steaks, burgers and mezze, Cape Beth Din (UOS) supervision, closed on Shabbat. Goldies Deli (4.4) is the family deli for sandwiches, challah and Friday trays - the fix if the hotel has no kitchen. Both close early on Fridays.
See all optionsWhere to stay
The rule of thumb: Sea Point or Bantry Bay, not the Waterfront if you want to walk to shul. The Premier Hotel Cape Town (4.1), on Beach Road in Sea Point, is walking distance from The Press, Goldies and Chabad - no standing kosher restaurant on site, but groups can arrange a kosher kitchen. For a search focused on Sea Point itself, see the booking link on Cape Town's destination page on the site.
See all optionsTable Mountain and Camps Bay
Table Mountain (4.8) is the attraction not to miss - the cable car, and wind shuts it down, so go up early and book ahead. There's no kosher food at the top, so eat in Sea Point first. Camps Bay, for the beach and sunset, fits the afternoon after coming down.
See all optionsPractical tip: Checkers The Point on Regent Road has Cape Beth Din bakery and deli counters - good for challah, packed meat and wine. Cape Town pairs world-class scenery with unusually convenient kosher infrastructure, as long as you stay within Sea Point's walking range. Every address and exact hour is on BooKasher's full Cape Town destination page.
