Budapest was the second destination we added to BooKasher, and for good reason - it's home to one of Europe's largest Jewish communities, around the Great Synagogue on Dohány Street (the second-largest in the world) and the vibrant Jewish Quarter surrounding it.

Synagogues and mikvah

The Dohány Street Great Synagogue (Neolog Ashkenazi) is the central landmark. Rumbach Street Synagogue (Status Quo Ante, rated 4.6) and Kazinczy Street Orthodox Synagogue (Ashkenazi Orthodox, 4.4) add two more options. Kazinczy Street Mikveh is rated 4.8.

Chabad houses

Chabad House Budapest (Lubavitch of Hungary, rated 4.7) and the Chabad-run Vasvári Pál Street Synagogue (4.6) serve the community.

Where to eat

Most restaurants in the Jewish Quarter are supervised by Rabbi Baruch Oberlander of Chabad Budapest (Mehadrin): Carmel Restaurant for Hungarian-Jewish meat cuisine, Tel Aviv Café for Israeli dairy, and Shuk HaCarmel Falafel Bar for shawarma, schnitzel and falafel. Fröhlich Kosher Confectionery is a long-standing bakery - worth calling ahead to confirm supervision details. Hanna Restaurant is CRC (Canada) supervised.

Sights

The Hungarian Parliament Building (4.8) and Fisherman's Bastion (4.7) are essential. The Great Synagogue itself includes a Jewish Museum (4.3), and the Jewish Quarter (District VII) with its famous ruin bars is rated 4.3. Tip: the best photo of the Parliament Building is from across the Danube or from Fisherman's Bastion, especially around sunset when the building is lit up.

Practical tip: Kosher Market (Koser Piac) on Dohány utca is the main kosher grocery store. Budapest offers a combination of striking Jewish history, delicious Hungarian-Jewish cuisine, and one of Europe's most beautiful cities.

Stay in the kosher area of Budapest

In Budapest, sleep in the 7th around the Dohány Street synagogue, not over in Buda. From there you walk to Chabad and the restaurants. For Shabbat, arrange a meal ahead.

To count as a booking, finish it in the same window after you click - it isn't saved for tomorrow.
