The Complete Guide to a Kosher Trip to Vienna

Vienna's Jewish community centers around two hubs: the Stadttempel in the city center — the only synagogue in Vienna to survive Kristallnacht in 1938 — and Taborstrasse in the Leopoldstadt district, with a concentration of kosher restaurants. Here's a short guide to planning your visit.

The Stadttempel synagogue

The Stadttempel, built in 1826 and deliberately hidden from the street (to comply with Austrian regulations barring synagogues with a street-facing façade), is precisely why it survived Kristallnacht — the Nazis couldn't burn it without endangering the adjoining buildings. Today it's Vienna's main active synagogue, and visits require advance registration for security reasons.

Chabad House and where to eat

Chabad Vienna, on Taborstrasse, is the hub of the Leopoldstadt Jewish quarter. Several of the city's well-known kosher restaurants operate on the same street: Alef-Alef near the Stadttempel, the meaty Mea Shearim, Prego for pizza, and Restaurant Simchas. La Mehadrin grocery store rounds out the shopping options.

Schönbrunn Palace — book the gardens separately

Schönbrunn Palace, the Habsburg family's summer residence with 1,441 rooms, is Vienna's most sought-after heritage site. Practical tip: the vast gardens surrounding the palace (including the Gloriette, with a panoramic view over the city) are free to enter and don't require a palace ticket — you can spend an hour or two in the gardens alone and skip the long line for the palace interior.

Between the Stadttempel, which survived Kristallnacht, and the magnificent Schönbrunn Palace, Vienna offers a combination of moving Jewish history alongside a rich imperial culture — all in a compact, easy-to-navigate city.

Stay in the kosher area of Vienna

In Vienna, base yourself in the centre or Leopoldstadt, not a far-out hotel. Kosher restaurants close some days - plan the week around that, not the other way around.
