Pesach 2027 Abroad: How to Choose, What to Check, Seder Away

Pesach abroad can be something special: a seder with a local community, Chol HaMoed in a new city and a table that is already set. But only if the details are settled in advance. Here is what to decide, what to ask and what you can check on our site, so that Pesach is kosher and joyful even far from home.

Pesach 2027: the dates and the calendar abroad

Erev Pesach falls on Wednesday, April 21, 2027, and the first seder is that same evening. Abroad the festival lasts eight days, until Thursday, April 29 (in Israel seven, until April 28), with a second seder on Thursday evening, April 22. The first two days are Yom Tov, and the second one falls on Friday, April 23 - so the festival runs straight into Shabbat, April 24, which is a Chol HaMoed Shabbat. Meals for those evenings and mornings, including the Shabbat food, need to be arranged ahead. The seventh and eighth days are Wednesday and Thursday, April 28-29. Dates are from Hebcal; confirm them with your community or rabbi. On our site every destination shows candle-lighting times for Shabbat and the festival, calculated for its exact location.

Three ways to spend Pesach abroad

A Pesach program at a hotel: full board under supervision, seders, activities for children and adults. The simplest option and the first to sell out, usually months before the festival. You choose by supervision, customs, crowd and price, and neither we nor this site vouch for any program. An apartment or a regular hotel: you organise the food yourself and hold the seder with a community or Chabad. More freedom and lower cost, but more work - see below for what to check in the kitchen. A community seder and separate lodging: you book accommodation near a synagogue or Chabad house and combine registered seders and meals. Best suited to cities with an active community.

What to check on a Pesach program's certificate

Kosher all year is not kosher for Pesach. Ask for a certificate that explicitly says "kosher for Passover", names the rabbi or supervising body and the year, and if possible get it in writing. Ask: whether the whole hotel and its kitchens are under supervision or only the dining hall; who leads the seder and in which nusach; whether the custom suits you (kitniyot, shmura matzah, soaked matzah); and what happens on Friday and Shabbat when festival and Shabbat join. Do not rely on a general "kosher hotel" - the list of hotels with kosher food on our site refers to ordinary kashrut, and Pesach has to be checked separately.

An apartment instead of a hotel: the kitchen and the shopping

A kitchen in an apartment or a hotel is not kosher for Pesach by default. Ask your rabbi in advance how to kasher or cover it and what may be used - and plan for disposable utensils and ones you bring from home. In a big city with a Jewish community there are usually kosher shops that sell products kosher for Pesach; in a small town there may be none, in which case bring some products from home or order ahead. Check the certification on every product, even a familiar one. Our site lists kosher shops in each destination - ask them whether they are open during the festival and what they stock for Pesach.

A seder away from home: Chabad and the community

Many Chabad houses host public sedarim, usually with advance registration and sometimes for a fee, and not always on both nights. Do not turn up without arranging it: in small places there is no last-minute seat. When you write to them, ask: which nights have a seder; the price; the language; which matzah; whether there are arrangements for children; and whether festival meals are also served. The page of each Chabad house on our site has the address and contact, and where they gave us a registration link for Shabbat meals it appears on the destination page.

Why a city with a large community is easier

The larger the community, the better the chance of finding products kosher for Pesach, sedarim in several places, services in your language and a few places to eat during the festival. New York, London, Paris and Miami are the familiar examples. Choose a destination by its community and not only by the view, and check it on our site: the synagogues, Chabad houses, kosher shops and festival times. Kosher restaurants that keep kosher all year are often closed over Pesach or switch to a Pesach menu under separate supervision. Ask every place whether it is kosher for Pesach, and do not assume that it is.

Before you travel: chametz, flights and Yom Tov

Selling chametz: if you leave home before the festival, arrange the sale of chametz and the search for chametz with your rabbi - ask early, because it depends on when you travel. Flights: do not fly on Yom Tov (April 22-23 and 28-29) or on Shabbat (April 24). Arrive at the destination before the festival begins on Wednesday, April 21, with room to spare - a day or two ahead is better - and plan the arrival against the candle-lighting time there. Food and luggage: rules on bringing food differ between countries and airlines, so if you are bringing matzah and Pesach products, check in advance what is allowed.

Planning Pesach with BooKasher

Choose a destination and open its page: candle-lighting times for Shabbat and the festival, synagogues and Chabad houses, kosher shops and restaurants with supervision details, and lodging near a synagogue. Hotel Pesach programs are listed by their organisers on the holidays-abroad page when they have offers - you book with them. For kashrut and opening hours during the festival, confirm directly with the place, because they change. For an apartment or a car for a larger party, the booking buttons on the site lead to the partners we work with, and the price and availability are theirs.

Pesach abroad needs earlier planning than any other festival: the certificate, the seder, the food and the journey. On each destination page of our site you will find the synagogues, Chabad houses, kosher shops and festival times. Chag kasher v'sameach!
