The first synagogue built in Portugal since the late-15th-century expulsion of Spanish and Portuguese Jews, inaugurated in 1904 in Romanesque-Byzantine Revival style. The building sits at an angle to the street with no direct facade - a legal requirement of the era barring non-Christian temples from facing the street directly.
