Here's a quick guide to planning the visit.

Synagogues in the Marais

Three historic synagogues anchor the quarter. The Grande Synagogue de la Victoire (Ashkenazi, rated 4.7) is Paris's grand central synagogue. Synagogue Agoudas Hakehilos on Rue Pavée is an Art Nouveau architectural gem, and Synagogue des Tournelles sits right in the heart of the Marais itself.

Beth Loubavitch Paris 3 in the Marais holds a perfect 5-star rating and regularly hosts tourists. Beit Loubavitch Centre Siège is steps from the Grand Synagogue, and Beth Habad Champs-Élysées gives you a presence right in the city center alongside the famous avenue.

Where to eat

Rue des Rosiers itself is packed with kosher restaurants - the famous L'As du Fallafel, Chlew for meat sandwiches, and Ernest for burgers, all certified by the Beth Din of Paris. Beyond the quarter, GUEFEN (modern Jewish-Mediterranean, rated 4.9) and Novela (Italian dairy, 4.8) widen the range, and Bograshov for burekas and salads is the highest-rated of them all. For a dairy brunch, Bloomy Brunch is rated 4.8, and Safrane offers upscale Indian meat cuisine (also 4.8).

Where to stay

In the Marais itself, Hôtel du Haut Marais and Les Jardins du Marais are within walking distance of the synagogues and restaurants. Anyone looking for a hotel actually set up for Shabbat will find it in two other areas: by the Arc de Triomphe and the Champs-Élysées, Hôtel Belfast runs on regular keys with no sensors - according to Chabad of the Champs-Élysées itself; and in the 9th arrondissement, near the Grand Synagogue, Hôtel Aida Opéra serves a kosher breakfast under Paris Beth Din supervision and offers a mechanical key on request. Touring Hôtel Opéra, directly opposite Synagogue Buffault, is also reported to have a kosher breakfast and a mechanical key - a detail absent from the hotel's own site and worth confirming with them. For families and longer stays, Aparthotel Adagio Haussmann Champs-Élysées offers units with an equipped kitchenette; entry there is by keycard, but staff assist on Shabbat when arranged in advance.

Shabbat around the Champs-Élysées

Most guides send Shabbat-observant travelers to the Marais, but there is a second option that is no less convenient. Chabad of the Champs-Élysées, at 122 Avenue des Champs-Élysées, hosts prayers and Shabbat and holiday meals and is rated 4.7 on Google - in a location that is also the center of a Paris trip. Meals are booked in advance through their site or by WhatsApp, and it is worth knowing up front that entry to the center is until 20:45 on Friday night and until 13:30 on Shabbat morning. A wide choice of hotels sits within walking distance, so a whole Shabbat in the middle of Paris without touching transport is realistic - which is exactly why the room key is worth settling before you book.

Mechanical keys, sensors, and what to ask for when booking

A keycard on the door is the difference between a calm Shabbat and one that runs on favors. In Paris it is solvable: Hôtel Belfast near the Champs-Élysées already runs on regular keys with no sensors, and Aida Opéra in the 9th offers a mechanical key on request. The practical rule is to ask in advance and in writing - a room with a mechanical key, on a low floor reachable by stairs, with no sensor lighting in the corridor or the room. It can almost always be arranged at booking, and almost never at check-in on a Friday evening.

Sights

The Eiffel Tower, the Louvre and the Arc de Triomphe are the obvious must-sees - all well accessible from the Marais. But the quarter itself, with its architecture and the old shops on Rue des Rosiers, is an attraction in its own right, rated 4.8. Tip: the best time to visit the Eiffel Tower is around sunset - after dark it sparkles for five minutes on every hour, on the hour, all night long.
